Case Study: Design and Development of Phaco-emulsifier system controller

Complete end to end design & development of a medical instrument.

Client

A medical distributor supplying equipment for cataract surgery. Client wanted to build an end to end product from design, development, manufacture, service & support.

Challenges

Background:

The client was from trading background and wanted to get into design, development & manufacturing. Was looking to develop a low cost import substitute since he had mechanical & manufacturing capabilities. Looking for a partner in electronics & firmware.

There was no technical /user documentation for the product since it was a reverse engineering project.

Problem Statement:

Client wanted to build his own product. Design & development capabilities were not his forte hence was looking for a technical partner.

Solution

Overview:

End to end development of electronics & firmware by adding new features. Platform used was Linux, Single board computer with ARM Processor.

Details:
Key components of the new product are:

  • Foot pedal with charger having wired as well as Bluetooth communication.
  • Controlling Ultra Sound power & wave pattern based on foot pedal.
  • Control Irrigation / Aspiration flow using stepper control based peristaltic pump.
  • 10″ LCD TFT with Touch Screen interface.
  • Facility for multiple procedures Diathermy, Ultra Sound & Vitrectomy in single device.
  • Audio feedback to identify current operation and alarms without looking at screen.
  • Monitoring of critical inputs low fluid level, high vacuum & motor failure.
  • Configuration save feature for each doctor for each type of procedure.

Benefits

Technology:

  • Latest UX & UI
  • Audio output to understand type of operation
  • Process parameters are configurable

Business:

  • Using B.A.T as end to end technical partner
  • Modular structure for ease of production
  • Support for regulatory compliance (ISO 13485/IEC 62304) processes & documentation
  • Low cost import substitute
